Download it or share the link. Text it to the birthday person, or post it.
Picking the dog photo
The photo decides how good the video looks. These are the things that matter for dogs.
Wait until the panting stops. The app does best with a closed mouth, and a dog fresh from a walk has its tongue out. Take the photo after a nap, not after fetch.
Keep the snout clear. A biscuit, a ball, or a bandana pulled up over the nose gets in the way of the mouth.
One dog in the frame. If the best photo is from the party with the other dogs, crop it down to the birthday dog first.
Get level with the nose. Crouch down and hold a treat just above your phone's camera, so your dog looks into the lens instead of up at your hand.
Dark face? Use daylight. For a black or dark brown face, stand near a window so the line of the mouth shows.
Other ways to do it
Say it with a name
In the app, switch to the Talk tab and type the message, names included. Choose a voice and your dog says it. Talking rather than singing, but it can say anything.
Questions people ask
- Does my dog sing the actual words?
- With Happy Birthday (Kids), yes. Your dog lip-syncs a sung version of the song with the words. With Happy Birthday Meow it meows the tune instead.
- Can it sing my dog's name, or the birthday person's?
- No. The songs are recordings, so the words are fixed. To get a name in, use the Talk tab: type a message like "Happy birthday, Grandma! Love, Biscuit", choose a voice, and your dog says it.
- My dog won't sit still for a photo. Now what?
- Use a photo you already have. Any photo works if the face is clear, the mouth is closed, and no other dog is in it.
- Do I have to download an app?
- No. TalkingPets runs in the browser on your phone or computer. There is an iPhone app as well if you prefer one.
- What does it cost?
- Your first video is free, with a watermark. The Unlimited plan removes the watermark and lets you make as many as you like.
